Concept

Natural Artefacts explores new and unknown musical landscapes by means of improvisation. One starting point is to integrate acoustic and electronic instruments, where influences from different genres and traditions can be traced. Here we can mention free improvisation, contemporary art and experimental music, minimalism, electronica and electroacoustic music. However, the music always starts from, and is firmly rooted, in the modern jazz tradition. The repertoire consists of compositions, looser structures and electronic backgrounds specially created for the present setting. A conscious artistic choice is the absence of a conventional bass player, in order to challenge the classic jazz rhythm section. As example, the bass function might instead be performed by a ”virtual bass player”; fixed figures or algorithms, where the latter usually are based on statistical models that are implemented in sequencers and/or software such as Max. Another artistic choice is to experiment with arbitrarily and independent sounding layers that will be heard together, which creates interesting sound textures.
